- When do atoms have a positive or negative charge?
- What is an “atomic number”?
- What’s in the nucleus of an atom?
- What is an ion?
- What is an isotope?
- What makes elements different from each other?
- What is a compound? Are the physical and/or chemical properties of a compound the same or different than the properties of the elements that form the compound?
- What’s the most abundant compound in living things?
- What is the difference between a covalent bond and ionic bond?

2-2: Properties of water

- Why is it important for water to help cells retain heat? (Hint: it helps maintain internal balance… remember the fancy term for that?  It was one of the characteristics of life… Look it up if you don’t remember!)
- What is a hydrogen bond?  Polar molecule?
- What is the difference between cohesion and adhesion?
- Know the pH scale: what values are considered acidic? basic? neutral?  And how does the concentration of hydrogen ions relate to pH values?

2-3: Carbon compounds (macromolecules)

- What element makes up all living things?
- Know each of the macromolecules and their monomers
- Recognize the chemical structures of macromolecules
- What makes up a nucleotide?
